Lisa Schlein

Dr. Schlein is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology. She received dual program degrees (MBA and DVM) from Colorado State University in 2011 and 2013, and completed a small animal rotating internship at Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson in 2014. Following internship, she completed a clinical pathology residency at the University of Illinois in 2017 prior to returning to Colorado State University to complete PhD training. Dr. Schlein's research interest in comparative oncology began before veterinary school and has been strongly influenced by the work of the Flint Animal Cancer Center. She is specifically evaluating canine cancer types that are relatively more common in some dog breeds, to optimize therapy for both canine and human patients. During residency, her focus was on evaluation of the novel compound PAC-1 to treat aggressive brain cancer, and her PhD work evaluated NF-kB signaling in hematopoietic tumors, including histiocytic sarcoma, as well as the NF-kB inhibitor, parthenolide. Additional areas of research interest include identification of mutations that drive clonal hematopoiesis in dogs and humans, as well as their impact on development of hematopoietic neoplasia; optimization of immunocytochemical stains to augment traditional cytopathology; and development of diagnostic assays.
