William R. Jacobs Jr., Ph.D., a Member of the National Academy of Sciences and Professor of Microbiology, Immunology, and Genetics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, has spent over 40 years advancing the study of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium leprae, the causes of tuberculosis and leprosy. In 1987, he pioneered the use of shuttle phasmids, revolutionizing genetic tools for mycobacteria and enabling advancements like plasmid transformation, transposon mutagenesis, and specialized transduction. His work led to the development of reporter phages for rapid TB drug susceptibility testing, the discovery of isoniazid’s drug target, the genetic basis of BCG attenuation, and novel M. tuberculosis-based TB vaccines.
Dr. Jacobs’ talk will explore how the adaptive immune response targets the tubercle bacillus for killing.
