Estradiol
Type of hormone: Steroid
Extraction procedure required
Purpose of Test: To determine serum concentration of Estradiol to obtain information about reproductive function.
Description of test and procedures: In this assay a limited amount of specific antibody is reacted with 125I-labeled estradiol which competes with estradiol in the sample for antibody sites. After incubation for a fixed time, separation of antibody-bound from free is achieved by addition of precipitant solution and subsequent centrifugation. Finally, the pelleted antibody-bound fraction is counted with a gamma counter. Sample concentrations are read from a calibration curve.
Sample Needed and Procedures for Submittal: Submit at least 1mL of serum on a cold pack. It may be possible to perform this analysis with less serum, but laboratory approval is required.
Interpretation of Results: results should be interpreted by a veterinary clinician or researcher familiar with reproductive function in the species being tested.
