About Paul

Dr. Avery is Professor of Clinical Pathology. His research involves the use of molecular techniques to enhance the detection and discrimination of feline and canine hematologic malignancies. Recent and ongoing projects include distinguishing reactive from neoplastic lymphocytosis in cats, lineage assessment in canine acute leukemias, improved discrimination of monoclonal proteins in multiple myeloma and the use of gene expression patterns to help subdivide canine lymphoma. Dr. Avery enjoys using clinical, case-based teaching to provide context to foundational knowledge. Providing students with the confidence, tools and guidance to allow them to solve clinical problems is particularly rewarding. Additional areas of interest are the use of digital microscopy in teaching cytology and the development of electronic, self-directed learning cases
