Tereza Magalhaes, also known as Teca Magalhaes, is a Research Scientist at the Foy lab. Tereza is a vector biologist with a BS in Biological Sciences from PUC-MG (Brazil) and a PhD in Parasitology from the University of Miami. She has been studying various aspects of mosquito physiology and mosquito-pathogen interactions using different disease models (e.g. arboviral diseases, malaria, lymphatic filariasis) and developing epidemiological studies on arboviral diseases, more specifically dengue, Zika and chikungunya, in Brazil. Her works combine basic and applied approaches aimed at better understanding the complex transmission dynamics of mosquito-borne diseases. Tereza has been working in Northeast Brazil (a region endemic for several vector-borne diseases) for many years, where she contributes to capacity building in several ways. A key component of her research projects is building and strengthening collaborative networks among institutions and research groups from the US and Brazil.
