In the future, I plan to attend veterinary school and hopefully continue research as a veterinary epidemiologist. In my free time, I enjoy reading, playing the cello, painting, and collecting vinyls from second-hand bookstores.

Olivia Martinez
Olivia Martinez - Kading Lab

I am from Aurora, Colorado, and I am a part of the first MARC cohort at Colorado State University! I am a biomedical science major with a concentration in microbiology and infectious disease, and I am planning to graduate in the spring of 2025. I am currently in Rebekah Kading's lab studying vector-borne diseases. I plan to pursue either an MD Ph.D. or a Ph.D., with a focus on infectious diseases. Outside of academics, I love taking care of houseplants, reading historical fiction, and spending time with my cat Slim Jim. I have a long way to go in my career, but I am thankful to the MARC program for its support!

Sage Phuepwint
Sage Phuepwint - Henao Tamayo Lab

I am a sophomore majoring in Biomedical Sciences with a concentration in Microbiology. I’m a first-generation immigrant and a first-generation college student. I know lots of random facts and I think infectious diseases are the coolest thing in the world. The ickier they are the better.

I’m from Mount Olive, NJ., and I decided to attend Colorado State University for this school’s commitment to diversity in the STEM field. I am currently pursuing a degree in Biomedical Sciences with a concentration in Microbiology and Infectious Disease, and in the future, I hope to work on clinical treatments for infectious diseases. In my free time, I like to read mystery novels and drag my friends along to escape rooms! I am honored to be a part of the CSU’s 2nd MARC cohort and I am excited to see where this opportunity takes me!

I’m from Wellington, Colorado; and I am part of the second MARC cohort at CSU! I am a second-year student majoring in Biomedical Sciences, with a concentration in Anatomy and Physiology. I really enjoy learning about cancer and cell biology, genetics, and the cardiovascular system; but anything relating to the human body is awesome to me! I hope to become a cardiologist in the future, and do research projects involving cancer along the way. Outside of school, I enjoy writing, drawing, hiking, listening to music, reading, and volunteering with kids at my church!

Ana Takatsu Fonseca
Ana Takatsu Fonseca

I grew up in Brazil and moved to the US, by myself, for college, in the hopes of pursuing a career in research. Currently my major is biomedical sciences with a concentration in Microbiology and Infectious disease. I’ve always wanted to work in genetic engineering and hope to one day be able to help in the development of this area. In the future I want to work towards a masters in genetic engineering and a PhD in this, or a related, area. In my free time I enjoy watching videos, listening to mythology podcasts, FaceTiming my friends from home and catching up on the news from both countries. I still have a long way until reaching my goals but MARC is making what once was just a dream become a feasible possibility.
