Dr. Schweizer is Professor of Bacteriology. Bacterial drug efflux pumps have traditionally been regarded as almost insurmountable challenges of antibacterial drug development. Recent research, however, has demonstrated that bacterial efflux systems can also be exploited for drug discovery, in particular in combating antimicrobial resistance—emerging as the major challenge of the coming century. Ongoing in the Schweizer laboratory are biochemical and genetic studies of multi-drug efflux pumps in the resistance of bacteria such as the Select Agent Burkholderia pseudomallei as well as Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
