About Carolina

Dr. Mehaffy is a microbiologist with experience and expertise in infectious disease biomarkers, proteomics, genomics, microbial physiology and discipline-based education. As director for the MIP Department's Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) program, she is an advocate for undergraduate research experiences and teaches MIP401, a CURE lab where students participate in an authentic research experience.

Dr. Mehaffy is the primary instructor for MIP351 and MIP401, is one of the primary instructors for MIP300, and co-teaches MIP443 and MIP292. She also participates as guest lecturer for MIP570 and MIP681.

In addition to undergraduate research, Dr. Mehaffy is interested in discipline-based education research to identify strategies that promote student engagement, motivation, and sense of belonging in the Microbiology curricula. Her teaching philosophy is based on best practices for inclusive teaching and centers on a growth mind set belief that all students can be successful.
